In late April, a number of Let’s Go members enjoyed a short break in Buxton arranged in collaboration with local u3as through the national u3a walking exchange. The weather was kind and the company great.
The break was based at the historic Old Hall Hotel right opposite the beautiful Pavilion Gardens, and reputed to be the oldest hotel in England, boasting Mary Queen of Scots as an early guest. There was some speculation as to who had been allocated her former room. The quirky Grade II listed building included an equally quirky Grade II listed lift, which would not work if someone had left the door open on another floor. Needless to say, it was frequently not working.

The break began with a guided tour of Buxton centre led by our u3a hosts, followed by a sumptuous welcome dinner. Other events included a guided tour of the fabulous Buxton Opera House, and a visit to Eyam, a village in the Peak District known as the “Plague Village” due to its isolation during the Great Plague. While some took the opportunity to walk in the Peak District National Park, others had pampering sessions in the Hotel Spa or a shopping trip to Bakewell.
