Mediaeval Liverpool Historic Walk

The Let's Go Group have now enjoyed two walks about historic Liverpool. The walk is around the H shaped layout of the city’s first seven streets. It was self guided from two excellent books about Hidden and Secret Liverpool.

The route is packed with hidden gems, hence there are lots of stops. We could go at a pace to suit ourselves

We started at James Street station to admire 'Dream Passage' . This was commissioned by Merseyrail to celebrate it's 100th anniversary. The artists were given a free hand to create but told it must be nothing to do with The Beatles or Trains. The artwork represents a rite of passage from Birth to Death.

We left the station via a passageway which is only open midweek. There are many historic posters and plaques showing the growth of Liverpool. The station entrance has been kept as it was originally built.

The group wondered why we got the train to James Street rather than walk from Moorfields. Now they know!

We went on to see one of the first buildings constructed of steel girders, the forerunner of skyscrapers; the building previously the headquarters of White Star Line - with all the sad stories about events unravelling after the loss of the Titanic; the former site of Liverpool castle; the amazing buildings along Castle Street; before stopping for coffee at the Old Adelphi Bank, now a well known coffee chain. The building has a spectacular Russian dome and bronze doors

There is just one tiny bit of Medieval Liverpool remaining - easy to walk over it without noticing.

We concluded with a visit to Liverpool's oldest Pub, Ye Old Hole in Ye Wall.

Now we will move on to explore other parts of hidden Liverpool
