Members of our Local History group enjoyed a fascinating visit to Southport’s Little Theatre on Hoghton Street on 27 October. It proved to be one of our most enjoyable outings, with everyone appreciating the opportunity to explore this much-loved local venue.
Our warm thanks go to the volunteers who welcomed us and shared their knowledge and enthusiasm. A memorable visit to a real Southport treasure!
Opened in 1937, the Little Theatre became the permanent home of Southport Dramatic Club, founded in 1920. Its theatrical roots reach back even further, to the St Andrews Old Girls Dramatic Society, which first performed in 1913. The theatre has since entertained generations of local audiences.

Our tour took us into the wardrobe room, dressing rooms, green room and fascinating props room. We stepped onto the stage and discovered how the curtains, sound and lighting systems work, how scenery is moved and how stage trapdoors are used. It gave us a wonderful insight into the skill and teamwork behind each production.
